50 First Dates (2004)

Updated: May 13, 2022

"Being with you is the only way I could have a full and happy life. You're the girl of my dreams... and apparently, I'm the man of yours."

This film is the most depressing "comedy" movie I've ever seen. It follows Henry (Adam Sandler) as he attempts to pick up Lucy (Drew Barrymore) while on vacation, only to find that she does not remember him the next day. As Henry attempts to outsmart Lucy's short-term memory loss, we see a romance bloom outside the confines of normal circumstances.

This film was very sweet. All Henry's antics made my heart feel like it was bursting, and I really enjoyed the overall premise of this story. I do unfortunately believe I will have to add this to my "watch once and never again" list, as it made me feel so unbelievably depressed

. The ending was like... kind of happy, but the fact that they ended it without some miraculous cure for her memory loss really hurt my feelings. I feel like weird extraterrestrial magic is sometimes a thing in rom coms (13 going on 30, 17 again) so why couldn't there have been a miracle here? I don't care that Henry overcame it and used his love for her to come up with new ways to get around the memory loss.....I hated the ending.

Aside from the painful ending, this film was really really wholesome. Watching Henry engineer all these schemes in order to stay in Lucy's good graces every morning was so heartwarming, and really impressive if I'm honest. His constant efforts back the concept of continuing to date your partner, even after you've gotten used to each other or you've been together for a decade. Henry never stops showing up for Lucy, and that's a fantastic sentiment to keeping love alive no matter the circumstances.

While this film was incredibly romantic, it was also pretty lighthearted despite the circumstances. What Adam Sandler movie isn't? Watching Henry embarrass himself over and over in front of the same people every day was both hilarious and romantic, so this movie really does the balance thing like a pro.

While I did say I would probably never watch this film again, I still ranked it #5 on my list because it's just so sweet it might as well give me a cavity.
