"I'm the bad guy. I don't save the day, I don't fly off into the sunset, and I don't get the girl."
Ok, I already know what you're thinking so I'm going to stop you there. Megamind is a rom com down to its very core, and I am going to convince you thoroughly.
The film follows Megamind, a blue alien sent to Earth to escape turmoil on his home planet. After the superhero with which he is constantly sparring dies at his hands, Megamind deals with an identity crisis. Along the way, he finds love.
I felt the need to include this unconventional rom com in the running for two reasons. One, because it's hilarious, and two, because it's important to look for rom coms where you might not expect them, especially when the goal is to learn all you can about the genre. That being said, I feel as though my extensive research qualifies me to be able to make this decision. Moving on.
Megamind is introduced in the beginning as nothing more than a fearsome troublemaker, but as the film progresses, we learn he wants more for himself than the villain lifestyle he'd come to detest. As he works to restore Metro City to its former glory alongside Roxanne Richie, journalist and former supposed lover to the town superhero, Megamind discovers love buried deep within his frozen heart.
Essentially, this film was not that much different from 13 Going On 30. Megamind finds himself in a new situation, he adapts, he's now happy and in love just like Jenna Rink. It takes him a while to realize he's in love, and that's what's so beautiful about it. We also see a lot of Roxanne and Megamind working together to solve problems, which serves as the catalyst for romance in this instance.
There is also the fact that this movie is absolutely hilarious. The bit where Megamind pronounces things like the name of the city or the word "school" incorrectly never once failed to make me cackle like a madman. The humor in this film was childish in the best way possible, and it's refreshing to watch something like this and consider it a rom com because of that fact.
If you've gotten to this point and still don't believe me, I implore you to watch this film for yourself, but imagine I'm there talking through the whole thing and telling you what parts make it a rom com. That should do it.
In the end, I did enjoy this film for all its quirks and oddities, but I feel as though it would still be disrespectful to put this above any of the other films, so unfortunately Megamind is #9 on my list.
